The
acceptance criteria, the qualification file(s) and the characterization
methodology serve as a guiding principle for the acceptance.
Acceptance
consists of verifying the conformity of the radioactive waste produced
in an approved facility with the applicable acceptance criteria.
The
following administrative and physical conformity checks are performed
on the radioactive waste:
| |
administrative
check: examination of the production documentation file drawn
up by the producer;
|
| |
physical
check: verification of certain technical parameters of the radioactive
waste. |
If
the outcome of these checks is favourable (i.e. assuming there are
no reservations), ONDRAF/NIRAS issues the producer with confirmation
of the decision to accept the waste - in order to take over the
waste definitively - by drawing up an Acceptance Report (technical
part) and a Transfer Report (financial part). Accepting radioactive
waste not only implies that ONDRAF/NIRAS assumes responsibility
for its later management, but also guarantees that the necessary
funds are made available to cover the costs of this management.
Other
administrative and technical procedures have been developed to monitor
the characteristics of the radioactive waste taken over by ONDRAF/NIRAS.
They aim at checking periodically whether the accepted waste continues
to meet the acceptance criteria applicable at the time of acceptance
and whether it is still compatible with the reference solution considered
for its long-term management.
Once accepted, the radioactive waste can be physically collected
by ONDRAF/NIRAS from the site of their producer.
