The
acceptance criteria are the minimum requirements the non-conditioned
and conditioned radioactive waste must meet to be managed safely
by ONDRAF/NIRAS. They are drawn up in accordance with the general
rules laid down in the Royal Decree of 16 October 1991, which were
approved by the competent authorities in 1999.
These
requirements are either technical (mechanical, physical, chemical,
radiological, thermal or biological) or administrative (documentary);
they concern:
| |
the
transport; |
| |
the
rauw waste (radioactive waste before processing); |
| |
the
primary packaging (for example empty drum, canister,...); |
| |
the
immobilizing matrix (for example concrete or bitumen poured
into the drum); |
| |
the
waste form (the whole composed of the processed waste and the
immobilizing matrix); |
| |
the
primary package (the whole composed of the processed waste,
the immobilizing matrix and the primary containment). |
The
acceptance criteria
apply to all stages of management (transport, receipt, processing/conditioning,
temporary storage and disposal) to ensure that:
| |
ONDRAF/NIRAS
can manage the radioactive waste safely once it is accepted
; |
| |
the
radioactive waste is sufficiently documented to enable later
management. |
