A unique information centre
Isotopolis is the ONDRAF/NIRAS information centre for young people between the ages of 15 and 18 and anyone else with an interest in radioactive waste issues. Visitors can learn about radioactivity in an interactive way and can find out what happens to radioactive waste in Belgium. An experienced guide accompanies them and conducts various experiments.

Isotopolis is located on the site of Belgoprocess, the industrial subsidiary of ONDRAF/NIRAS, where all Belgium's radioactive waste is sent for processing and/or interim storage.

A visit to Isotopolis takes two hours. It is also possible to visit a processing plant and a storage facility for radioactive waste (Belgoprocess). This takes a further hour.

Structured around three themes
The first theme of the exhibition is radioactivity and radiation. A series of practical demonstrations and experiments in a mini-laboratory helps put these phenomena into perspective. The cloud chamber, in which ionising radiation is made visible, is unique in Belgium.

The second theme is the processing of radioactive waste. Where does radioactive waste come from? What does it look like? What happens to it? We explain the facts using examples, models, and photos.

The third theme concerns the possible options for long-term management of radioactive waste. Photos and models of the various disposal concepts give an overview of the situation as it stands at the moment.

Practical information for visitors
Isotopolis is open throughout the school year from Monday to Friday. Visits are free, but should be booked in advance.

Isotopolis provides a free information pack to help students prepare their visit.
