As for the management of conventional industral and domestic waste, radioactive waste management begins with certain measures taken at the source, on the site of the waste producer.

Prevention
The radioactive waste producers are obliged by ONDRAF/NIRAS to apply a prevention policy. This means that they must limit their waste production as much as possible, in particular by recycling and recovering materials. Thanks to this effort, the volume of commonly produced radioactive waste has decreased regularly over the years.

Identification and sorting
As for the selective collection of domestic waste, the producers must also sort their waste according to their characteristics (solids or liquids, combustible or compressible, low or highly radioactive, containing long-lived radioelements or not, ...). They also must clearly indicate the radioactive and non-radioactive content on the packagings according to the directives of ONDRAF/NIRAS. The waste must indeed comply with the ONDRAF/NIRAS specifications. This ensures that later stages in the management process can proceed safely and efficiently.
